The Most Powerful Machine Boss in History

The ~ly notorious machine politician of the 1860 era was William Marcy Tweed, more commonly known for the re~on that “Boss” Tweed. (Maier, 2006) His timely life was not outstanding, but he made a behalf for himself in the later years. William Tweed was single in kind the biggest machine bosses of the 1860’s and 1970’s. (Hershkowitz, 2002)

Born up~ the body April 3rd, 1823, He did not get to from an impoverished background, he had predetermined bookkeeping and worked in his house’s chair making firm. (Maier, 2006). After acting as a chair maker for divers years, William Tweed became involved in science of government. Tweed served as alderman from 1852-1853. He than was elected in the manner that a Democrat congressman from 1853-1855 to the thirty-fourth congress.(Hershkowitz, 2002) As a limb of the powerful Tammany Society, Tweed and his three loyal companions, Peter Sweeney, Oakley Hall and Richard Connolly guide New York like despots. (Maier, 2006). After essence elected to the State senate in 1867 and 1869, serving four years; than once more was elected in 1871, but was not permitted to take his mansion; commissioner of the department of common works in 1870; tried in 1874 up~ the body charges of official embezzlement, found actually offending, and sentenced to twelve years of incarceration. In December 1875 William Tweed escaped bridewell. He reached Spain before he was caught, than he was brought back to the United States steady a man-of-war, again than propose back into prison in New York City from November 23, 1867, to the time when his death in April 12, 1878. (Hershkowitz,2002).

While Tweed was the ~ numerous notorious machine politician of the series. Unlike many other ‘bosses’ of the daytime Tweed did not come from an impoverished background. Turning to politics, he then joined the Tammany Organization, which ~ the sake of decades was the house for the Democratic Party, in New York City. (Maier, 2006).
