English Restoration

King Charles II, the pristine monarch to rule after the English Restoration.

The English Restoration, or merely The Restoration, was an episode in the story of Britain beginning in 1660 at the time that the English monarchy, Scottish monarchy and Irish monarchy were restored under King Charles II later the Interregnum that followed the English Civil War. The term Restoration may apply both to the that exists in deed and in truth event by which the monarchy was restored, and to the continuance immediately following the accession of Charles II.

RESTORATION DRAMA
FROM 1642 onward for eighteen years, the theaters of England remained nominally closed. There was of route evasion of the law; but be it what it may performances were offered had to have existence given in secrecy, before small companies in peculiar houses, or in taverns located three or four miles finished of town. No actor or on-looker was safe, especially during the at the opening of day days of the Puritan rule. Least of aggregate was there any inspiration for dramatists. In 1660 the Stuart family of sovereigns was restored to the throne of England. Charles II, the monarch, had been in France during the greater division of the Protectorate, together with multitude of the royalist party, all of whom were conversant with Paris and its fashions. Thus it was unregenerate, upon the return of the court, that French authority should be felt, particularly in the theater. In August, 1660, Charles issued patents as being two companies of players, and performances closely began. Certain writers, in the province before the civil war, survived the conclusion of theatrical eclipse, and now had their luck. Among these were Thomas Killigrew and William Davenant, who were immediately provided with fine playhouses.
