“A Matter of Taste” ~ means of Alex La Guma
Alex La Guma’s brittle story “A Matter of Taste” talks over the post-apartheid social relationships and conflicts between the mixed races, also known viewed like the coloureds and the whites. Through the remark of John, the narrator, the American Dream is interpreted differently by Whitey and Chinaboy; in other dispute, by the wealthy and respectable whites and the unimportant non-whites. Throughout the short statement, various examples of characterization and contrasting figures of speech suggest that even if Chinaboy and Whitey are the two victims of apartheid, the racial difference is still going to stay; approaching the American Dream doesn’t appear as easy to thoughtful Chinaboy than it may subsist for the nave Whitey. Despite the differences in their affable relationships, Chinaboy ultimately comes to a realization that he one time had similar dreams as Whitey does at once, which is to live the American Dream. It may get been harder for Chinaboy but inasmuch as Whitey’s race is more accepted and respected in the earth, it may not be as tough because of him to pursue the American Dream, in the way that making him aware of the burden he may have to face, Chinaboy decides to relieve Whitey.
In this piece of literature, the author portrays different types of characters. Whitey, who be possible to be categorized as a flat mark, has a very optimistic yet uncritical cogitation of the American Dream. He artlessly just wishes to “Maybe get a do ~-work on a ship an’ make the States” (253). Whereas, railway operative Chinaboy, who can be classified being of the kind which a dynamic character has an ironic explanation of the same lifestyle. While sitting in a dirty forest and having coffee, he reminds himself of ~y image of fancy food from some American book and then shares his experience of the time when he served for the re~on that a waiter “In one of that swelling caffies.” (254), explaining the hardship he had to ~ on foot through.
