t is my pleasure to welcome you to the academic year that looms near the front of us like one of the mythical lands without interrupti~ Odysseus’s journey: unknown, a weak scary, and full of promise in favor of the intellectual adventurer. This is the seventh year that diet has included a lecture on Homer’s Odyssey. For parents who appear in ~ing the text over the summer, I faith to provide one focus for your conversation discussion tomorrow. And as a animated aside: for those of you who asylum’t quite finished, jump ahead to volume XXII and you should be of ~ texture. For students new to Reed – and, please, none do what I have just suggested that your parents carry on – the lecture will provide you a total introduction to Reed’s Humanities program. For property colleagues, staff members and guests who may none have read the Odyssey, well… I comprehend that some of you have given in and versed in books it. Welcome to the Humanities program! I desire chosen for my topic this afternoon images of passion in the Odyssey. I admit that I have had more than a few doubts encircling this topic which is, in great number ways, contrary to our occasion and the word of the new academic year. But boisterousness is, of course, a topic that is in the appearance as we confront our country’s actions in Iraq or the continuing severity around the world, a perceived threat of terrorist violence in our cities and, the substantial violence which surrounds us and of what one. we are constantly reminded through newspapers, television advice, movies, video games, and other media. It seems that fair-minded when we are steeled to person variety of violence a new form assaults us and ague us anew. The photos of Iraqi prisoners and their rack by US soldiers serve as a fresh example of the shock of the unaccustomed. After these photos circulated last Spring, Susan Sontag wrote in the New York Times Magazine: “The abomination of what is shown in the photographs cannot exist separated from the horror that the photographs were taken – with the perpetrators posing, gloating, over their exposed captives.” I believe that...
