Staying true to self or following the crowd were the two choices that Millicent had to pass over in the story “initiation” by Sylvia Plath. Often seasons teenage girls long to be a share of a group or a bludgeon to feel a sense of accepting. Millicent started off as a sheepish girl who wanted to be a share of a sorority, and later had every epiphany and decided to reject the association into the sorority. She declined members into the sorority because she did not inadequacy to lose her best friend Tracy. She did not like the opinion of losing her sense of decision of character, and felt as if she did not be in want of to belong to a club to describe to other human beings.
Tracy, Millicent’s in the highest degree friend, was not invited into the sorority, and Millicent felt culpable because Tracy had never left her verge. The story states that Millicent “didn’t understand what caused her revolt, but it definitely had something to perform with Tracy.” Although Millicent had the come to pass to be recognized and gain popular regard, she considered the feelings of her with most propriety friend. Tracy stated that Millicent would make different whether she thought she would or not, end Millicent thought otherwise. Being nave towards the commencement process, she thought that even on the model of she joined the sorority she and Tracy would rest friends.
Millicent was not a well-known young woman, but she did have her possess sense of individuality. Joining the sorority meant that she would nay longer be the quiet girl, ~-end a girl who had to tally to the requirements of the accredited. She would have to dress, conference, and act like them. Because of the demoralization involved, Millicent started to question her reasons as antidote to wanting to join the sorority. She did not like while her big sister Bev referred to her viewed like “Gopher”. She felt as if the behalf was a denial of individuality, and she had at no time been the type to take the sacred profession from others.
