GEOGRAPHY REVIEW NOTES: UNIT 1
Locating Places in c~tinuance a Map

Remote Sensing – The technology in opposition to studying Earth by using images and photographs on top of its surface
GPS – Global Positioning System. A follower based position-finding system that circles Earth in exact orbits.
Geostationary Satellite – Satellite that singly stays on the equator and turns through it as Earth rotates (eg. Weather satellites, connection satellites)
Near-Polar Satellite – Follows a fixed boreal-south orbit as the Earth rotates in the lower regions. Offers complete coverage of the Earth’s surface over a period of time. (eg. Agriculture/pelagic surveillance)
Longitude – Imaginary lines that let flow North-South; key line is the Prime Meridian, lines compass out east and west from in that place.
Latitude – Imaginary lines that run East-West; clew line is the Equator, lines pair out north and south from in that place.
Major Forces of Change

Tectonic forces – Surface of Earth consists a dynamic grid of slowly pathetic rock plates, and their movement causes geological changes (eg. Mountain irons created in Canada from plates bumping hand in hand, oil/gas formed when Canada’s earth was located in a warmer climate)
Folding - The folding/bending of rocks to constitute mountains (Rocky Mountains)
Faulting – Earthquakes caused when plates collide
Glaciation – Canada used to have ~ing covered by glaciers/massive ice sheets that scraped and scarred the view, as well as wearing down and transporting rock over many centuries
Erosion – Wearing on the ground of the Earth’s surface
Four Geologic Eras (Youngest to Oldest) – Cenozoic, Mesozoic, Paleozoic, Precambrian (alphabetical ordain)
Continental Drift Theory

-Theory that a long time ago, all of Earth’s disembark masses collided to form one supercontinent called Pangaea; excepting that the continents moved
1. Things spasm together like jigsaw puzzles (South America & Africa)
2. Fossils of the sort creature found in faraway continents
3. Mountain ranges seemed to subsist broken by the ocean (eg. Caledonian and...
