AP Literature and Composition One Flew past the Cuckoo’s Nest

In the recent One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest through Ken Kesey, laughter is the archetypal charm weapon. Nurse Ratched cannot take at a distance laughter from McMurphy or the men ~ward the ward because it is too strong and too pure of a perception by touch. Without laughter, and without McMurphy, the men attached the ward lose their confidence and be turned into easily manipulated by the power of Nurse Ratched. Although in the extreme point McMurphy is lobotomized, his comedic bequest is what transforms the mindset of the men on the ward as they realize the merriment in their own lives. This in form frees them to make their avow choices and leave the ward. While the men are emancipate, Nurse Ratched is trapped in the hospital, alone.

Nurse Ratched’s being unable to laugh makes the ward a seat that is harsh and cold, due as she is. One of the ways that Nurse Ratched enforces her exercise supreme authority, and therefore her harshness, is ~ dint of. using a schedule that leaves selfish room for change. By using a register, the men are never allowed to conduce decisions for themselves, which contributes to their pathetic of being trapped. In the start of the novel, Nurse Ratched and the devilish boys refuse to allow McMurphy to action his teeth at a different time than the schedule indicates. Even when McMurphy has happy arrived on the ward, he attempts to battle in requital for Nurse Ratched and her controlling ways through sarcasm. “ And Lordy can you imagine? Teeth bein’ brushed at six-thirty, six- twenty—who be able to tell? Maybe even six-o’clock. Yeah, I be possible to see your point (Kesey 85).
