RELIGIOUS REFROM
MOVEMENTS IN MODERN INDIA

W

e are a surpassingly lucky people today. We are set ~ from foreign domination and also
independent from many other rigidities which our ancestors had to stand over against. The Indian
society in the pristine half of the 19th century was varna ridden, decadent and rigid.
It followed undisputed practices which are not in feed with humanitarian feelings or values
only were still being followed in the celebrity of religion. A change was in return needed in
society. When the British came to India they introduced the English speech as well as
certain modern ideas. These ideas were those of liberty, social and economic equality,
fraternity, democrats and justice which had a frightful impact on Indian society.
Fortunately in opposition to our country there were some highly civilized Indians like Raja Ram Mohan
Roy, Ishwar Chand Vidyasagar, Dayanand Saraswati and sundry others who were willing
to take arms and bring in reforms in union so that it could face the challenges of the West.

OBJECTIVES
After lecture this lesson you will be adroit to:

identify some common characteristics of exact and social reform movement;

explain the role played by Raja Rammohan Roy and his Brahmo Samaj in bringing
end for end religious reforms;

recognise the Prarthana Samaj in the manner that an institution that worked for conscientious as
well as social reform;

unfold the ideology of the Arya Samaj and its contributors to conversable and religious
reforms;
